Downshire School 40th Anniversary Celebration

On Sunday 3rd June 2108, Ballycarry Presbyterian Church hosted a special service to mark the 40th anniversary of the founding of Downshire School in Carrickfergus.  Many of our members have connections with the school.  We were pleased to welcome many current and former pupils and members of staff taking part in the special service as Downshire celebrates its 40 years of history and looks forward to the start of the new Carrickfergus Academy as Downshire and Carrickfergus College merge to become one.

Corrymeela Church Family Weekend

CORRYMEELA WEEKEND 16—18 FEBRUARY  2018

Theme:  Who are You!   A  number of Teens, Children & Adults made their way up to the North Coast to Corrymeela, just north of Ballycastle looking out to Rathlin.  Sometimes our activities were joint and others were separate because of the help of volunteers, from across the world, working at Corrymeela.  Each morning began with  a time for Prayer when the day was handed over to God, while in the evenings we joined with all on site for worship in the place called ‘the croi’ which means the heart – an apt name for a place of worship. As part of our programme, the adults learnt  about ‘Samson’ in Bible Studies led by Maurice, the Teens some team building and the children enjoyed play through Lego and games involving co-operation supported by volunteers. (seen below)

Blessed with lovely weather  an afternoon coastal walk was refreshing.  It was then time for sharing of talents  – teaching how wire a plug, sew on buttons with ‘4 thread method’ & learn to sew to make a cross with wool.!  These activities were the means to an end to    Build up the faith of our Church Family.   Thank you  to  all who shared in this venture.

Comments re the Weekend:

  • ‘It was fantastic in many ways, like bringing members of the congregation closer. It was amazing to see other teenagers, like myself, have a spark lit within them and hopefully back home in Ballycarry we can feed the flame and allow for each and every member to grow in the light of Christ.’
  • ‘The weekend was the opportunity to enjoy the beauty & tranquility of Corrymeela.  It was great to see the bond there was with the young people.’
  • ‘Corrymeela was a chance to build our multi generational Church, everyone left feeling closer.  Closer to God, closer to the Church family and closer to those who may have began the weekend as strangers.  Everyone was able to share something; sharing time, sharing meals, sharing experiences and even sharing the washing up!’

Christmas Hampers

In December 2017, a willing band of volunteers prepared, wrapped and filled more than 20 hamper boxes which were donated to the International Meeting Point.

Many thanks to all members who contributed items for the parcels – you’ve all helped make Christmas that bit more special for some needy families.
